Ecumenical Water Network releases statement on water justice

02 December 2016

After gathering in Nigeria from 27-29 November, representatives from the World Council of Churches (WCC) Ecumenical Water Network released a statement entitled “A Pilgrimage of Water Justice in Africa.”

The statement acknowledges that access to safe water and, even more, access to improved adequate sanitation is a major challenge in the world.

“Access to safe water and improved adequate sanitation are still major challenges in Africa, where millions of people do not have access to safe drinking water and adequate sanitation facilities,” the statement reads. “Thousands of children die every day due to consumption of contaminated water and poor sanitation facilities.”

The statement also reflects on churches’ commitment to water and sanitation, as well as the need for religious and community leaders to get actively involved in advocacy for the human right to water and sanitation.
